Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure, the Ford family was managed by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on words as a young teenager. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she wasn't a good fit. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her classmates. Ford did not complete her degree in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her debut on television in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. But Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
